Waitomo is roughly a two-and-a-half-hour drive south of Auckland, making it a common detour for visitors heading toward Rotorua or Taupo. The most famous attraction is the standard Waitomo Glowworm Caves tour. This is a highly regimented, heavily commercialized operation designed to push large volumes of tourists through the cave system efficiently.
The standard tour involves a dry walk through the upper levels of the cave, culminating in a short boat ride on the underground river. In complete silence and total darkness, the boat glides beneath the "Glowworm Grotto." The ceiling above looks identical to a starry night sky, bathed in a soft blue-green light. The Photography Ban
One major friction point for modern visitors is the strict ban on photography inside the main Glowworm Cave. The justification is valid: flashes disrupt the glowworms (causing them to "turn off" their lights) and people stopping for long exposures create dangerous bottlenecks in the dark. You are forced to be entirely present in the moment, which many find refreshing, but it does mean you will leave without photographic proof of the trip's highlight, save for the official photos sold in the gift shop.

Clad in thick wetsuits and armed with a rubber inner tube, visitors float, jump, and crawl through the subterranean rivers of Ruakuri Cave. Floating backward down an underground stream in pitch darkness, staring up at the bioluminescent ceiling, transforms a simple sightseeing stop into a profound adventure.
